Colette Moore: Quoting Speech in Early English

Quoting Speech in Early English

Description

Before quotation marks became widespread convention, English texts were organized more fluidly, employing varying lexical and textual strategies for marking represented discourse. When we add our present-day quotation marks to editions of Middle English texts, we also overlay our modern interpretation of speech representation, with its expectations of faithful reporting and carefully delineated voices. In doing so, we mask the less-determined nature of early speech marking, and obscure the ways that its plasticity functions as a narrative and stylistic tool. This book provides the first full study of speech representation in pre-modern English. Studying the pragmatic and discourse strategies of English texts from 1350-1600 is essential to reading Middle English works and to understanding the cultural assumptions implicit in the production of early written texts.

CBT for Occupational Stress in Health Professionals

Description

The costs of occupational stress in terms of sickness absence, ill-health-related retirement, litigation and lost productivity are increasing, putting strain on economies across the world. The fact that health care work is inherently more stressful than many other occupations makes it vital that the problem of occupational stress among health professionals is addressed. CBT for Occupational Stress in Health Professionals goes beyond simply defining the problem and fills a gap in the current literature by providing clear and concise individual treatment interventions. In three parts, the book covers: * an overview of stress in the occupational context * the standard CBT approach to assessment, formulation and treatment * a new schema-focused approach to treating occupational stress. The schema-focused approach presented here provides powerful tools for treating a range of work-related problems for which standard CBT approaches are ineffective. Case studies are presented throughout the book to illustrate the therapeutic approaches described. This book will be of huge benefit to clinical and organizational psychologists, psychiatrists, mental health workers, counsellors and anyone else involved in treating occupational stress. It will also have much to offer those who manage people suffering from stress, human resource workers and those who are experiencing work-related stress.

George Eliot,Jessica Hische: Middlemarch

Middlemarch

Description

From A to Z, the Penguin Drop Caps series collects 26 unique hardcovers featuring cover art by type superstar Jessica Hische It all begins with a letter. Fall in love with Penguin Drop Caps, a new series of twenty-six collectible and gift-worthy hardcover editions, each with a type cover showcasing a gorgeously illustrated letter of the alphabet by superstar type designer Jessica Hische, whose work has appeared everywhere from Tiffany & Co. to Wes Anderson's film "Moonrise Kingdom" to Penguin's own bestsellers "Committed" and "Rules of Civility." A collaboration between Jessica Hische and Penguin Art Director Paul Buckley, the series design encompasses foil-stamped paper-over-board cases in a rainbow-hued spectrum across all twenty-six book spines and a decorative stain on all three paper edges. Penguin Drop Caps debuts with an A for Jane Austen s "Pride and Prejudice," a B for Charlotte Bronte s "Jane Eyre," and a C for Willa Cather s "My Antonia," and continues with more classics from Penguin. E is for Eliot. Considered one the masterpieces of realist fiction, George Eliot s novel, "Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life," explores a fictional nineteenth-century Midlands town in the midst of modern changes. The proposed Reform Bill promises political change; the building of railroads alters both the physical and cultural landscape; new scientific approaches to medicine incite public division; and scandal lurks behind respectability. The quiet drama of ordinary lives and flawed choices are played out in the complexly portrayed central characters of the novel the idealistic Dorothea Brooke; the ambitious Dr. Lydgate; the spendthrift Fred Vincy; and the steadfast Mary Garth. The appearance of two outsiders further disrupts the town s equilibrium Will Ladislaw, the spirited nephew of Dorothea s husband, the Rev. Edward Casaubon, and the sinister John Raffles, who threatens to expose the hidden past of one of the town s elite. "Middlemarch" displays George Eliot s clear-eyed yet humane understanding of characters caught up in the mysterious unfolding of self-knowledge."

Roger Quilter: 55 Songs: High Voice the Vocal Library

Description

(Vocal Collection). With a graceful gift for lyrical vocal writing, English composer Roger Quilter (1877-1953) created a rich body of art songs. Very few composers working in English have matched his achievement of a living body of beloved, relevant, literate repertoire. The strong melodies and natural phrasing make his compositions perfect literature for the progressing singer. There has never before this publication been a significant collection of Quilter. This new edition conveniently and economically collects 55 songs, all in clear, new music engravings and in two keys (with original keys noted). Many of the songs have never been published in transposition before this edition. This collection features a biography of the composer and notes on the songs. 224 pages, sewn binding.

Contemporary / American English Inman leaves the horrors of the American Civil War and begins a long, dangerous journey home to Ada, the woman he loves. Along the way, he witnesses great poverty, cruelty, and violence. Will he ever see Ada again? And if he does, will she recognize the man he has become? This Pack contains a Book and MP3 Published in 1864, Notes from Underground is considered the author's first masterpiece - the book in which he "became" Dostoevsky - and is seen as the source of all his later works. Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, whose acclaimed translations of The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment have become the standard versions Origami Pop-Ups: To Amaze and Amuse free pdf in English, now give us a superb new rendering of this early classic. Presented as the fictional apology and confession of the underground man - formerly a minor official of mid-nineteenth-century Russia, whom Dostoevsky leaves nameless, as one critic wrote, "because 'I' is all of us" - the novel is divided into two parts: the first, a half-desperate, half-mocking political critique; the second, a powerful, at times absurdly comical account of the man's breakaway from society and descent "underground." The book's extraordinary style - brilliantly violating literary conventions in ways never before attempted - shocked its first readers and still shocks many Russians today. This magnificent new translation captures for the first time all the stunning idiosyncrasy of the original.

Australia's Welfare Wars Revisited: The Players, the Politics and the Ideologies

Description

This represents a substantial revision of Philip Mendes' successful textbook Australia's Welfare Wars, in which the author explains - and questions - many of the values and assumptions that underpin contemporary social welfare policies. In particular, the book is critical of the Neo-liberal or Economic rationalist ideas that now dominate the welfare debates in Australia and overseas, and instead demonstrates and reaffirms the ongoing relevance of social-democratic and welfare-state ideals.

Contemporary / American English Inman leaves the horrors of the American Civil War and begins a long, dangerous journey home to Ada, the woman he loves. Description

Still one of Gibran's most well-loved works over 70 years after its original publication, Jesus the Son of Man is a striking fictional portrait of Christ as seen through the eyes of his contemporaries. Depicting a variety of famous figures, from Mary Magdalen to Pontius Pilate, Gibran's spellbinding collection of narratives combine historical authority with the supreme eloquence that his admirers hold so dear. Fully conscious of the social, political, and religious realities of Palestine and Rome at the time, and at home with the local traditions and language, Gibran effortlessly evokes the spellbinding power of Christ's presence upon his associates. Presented in an attractive gift format and accompanied by Gibran's original artwork, this new edition allows Gibran's inspirational account of Christ to be heard once more.

The first millennium saw a rich and distinctive artistic tradition form in Europe. While books had long been central to the Christian religious tradition, education, and 20 Ways to Draw a Bike and 44 Other Incredible Ways to Get Around: A Sketchbook for Artists, Designers, and Doodlers download epub culture, they now became an important artistic medium, sometimes decorated with brilliant colours and precious metals. Lawrence Nees explores issues of artist patronage, craftsmanship, holy men and women, monasteries, secular courts, and the expressive and educational roles of artistic creation. He discusses early Christian art within the late Roman tradition, and the arts of the newly established kingdoms of northern Europe not as opposites, but as different aspects of a larger historical situation. This approach reveals the onset of an exciting new visual relationship between the church and the populace throughout medieval Europe, restoring a previously marginalized subject to a central status in our artistic and cultural heritage.

"Barnes & Noble Classics "pulls together a constellation of influences--biographical, historical, and literary--to enrich each reader's understanding of these enduring works. Born in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1830, Dickinson began life as an energetic, outgoing young woman who excelled as a student. However, in her mid-twenties she began to grow reclusive, and eventually she rarely descended from her room in her father's house. She spent most of her time working on her poetry, largely without encouragement or real interest from her family and peers, and died at age fifty-five. Only a handful of her 1,775 poems had been published during her lifetime. When her poems finally appeared after her death, readers immediately recognized an artist whose immense depth and stylistic complexities would Real Presence: The Glory of Christ with Us and within Us download PDF one day make her the most widely recognized female poet to write in the English language.Dickinson's poetry is remarkable for its tightly controlled emotional and intellectual energy. The longest poem covers less than two pages. Yet in theme and tone her writing reaches for the sublime as it charts the landscape of the human soul. A true innovator, Dickinson experimented freely with conventional rhythm and meter, and often used dashes, off rhymes, and unusual metaphors--techniques that strongly influenced modern poetry. Dickinson's idiosyncratic style, along with her deep resonance of thought and her observations about life and death, love and nature, and solitude and society, have firmly established her as one of America's true poetic geniuses.Includes an index of first lines.Rachel Wetzsteon is Assistant Professor of English at William Paterson University. She has published two books of poems, "The Other Stars" and "Home and Away."

Jan Baetens,Hugo Frey: The Graphic Novel: An Introduction

The Graphic Novel: An Introduction

Description

This book provides both students and scholars with a critical and historical introduction to the graphic novel. Jan Baetens and Hugo Frey explore this exciting form of visual and literary communication, showing readers how to situate and analyse graphic novels since their rise to prominence half a century ago. Several key questions are addressed: what is the graphic novel? How do we read graphic novels as narrative forms? Why is page design and publishing format so significant? What theories are developing to explain the genre? How is this form blurring the categories of high and popular literature? Why are graphic novelists nostalgic for the old comics? The authors address these and many other questions raised by the genre. Through their analysis of the works of many well-known graphic novelists - including Bechdel, Clowes, Spiegelman and Ware - Baetens and Frey offer significant insights for future teaching and research on the graphic novel.

While on a mandatory senior field trip, a flash flood cuts off Sera and three classmates from their group with no way to call for help. But they're not as alone as they thought... Every night, Herb's mother reads him a bedtime story. Sometimes it's about a big bad wolf who terrifies little girls and their grandmothers, with his chilling growl and big yellow teeth. The story gets very nasty in the middle and everybody nearly comes to a sticky end. But, by the last page, it all turns out well and happy-ever-afterly. But what will happen to Herb when the wolves escape from his book? Will they gobble him up? Or will this, too, end happily-ever-after? Read this thrilling tale to find out - and learn what to do if the wolves ever escape from your storybook! And who better to test the prowess of these mastercrafted feats of modern engineering than Stig himself, who'll do battle with the big-gun showstopping cars from the last three years to find out just who can claim the glory of fastest supercar. Step into the The Graphic Novel: An Introduction ebook pdf driver's seat and brace yourself for some serious car porn as we bring you the most tantalisingly beautiful supercars you'll find in the world today. There's only one word for it - Poweeerrrr!

Collins Classics: Mary Barton

Description

HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics. 'We're their slaves as long as we can work; we pile up their fortunes with the sweat of our brows, and yet we are to live as separate as if we were in two worlds...' Based in the industrial unrest of 1840s Manchester, Mary Barton is a factory-worker's daughter living a working-class life in Victorian England. She soon attracts the attentions of the mill-owner's son, Harry Carson, and in the hope that marrying him will improve her prospects and help her to transcend class boundaries, she rejects her former lover Jem Wilson. However, when Harry is shot the main suspect is Jem and Mary finds herself torn between the two men. At the same time, she discovers that her father, John Barton, who has been active in fighting for the rights of his fellow workers is implicated in the murder. Gaskell's exploration of the class division and the oppression of the working-class is demonstrated effectively through the character of Mary, highlighting how lack of communication and mistrust can arise through such vast differences in lifestyle and wealth.
